Sloppy Storm Ending- 10:45AM 12/19/2009

This messy rain/snowstorm is coming to an end, after picking up nearly an inch of rain and about 2 inches of snow here in Monson. Temperatures bottomed out only around 33° this morning, causing the snow to be extremely wet and heavy. Additionally, the relatively high temperatures cause it to be mixed with rain, and by about 10 this morning we were over to all rain, with temperatures now into the low 40s. Areas of western Hampden, as well as Franklin, Hampshire, and Berkshire county received up to and over 20 inches of snow!

This storm brings our seasonal snowfall total up to 29.0", rather low. By this time last year, we had 10 inches more, at 39.5", though in the 2006-2007 winter season we only saw a total of 24.3", and only 11.3" by this time!

Snowfall totals, update - 12/20/2009 2:15 PM

We saw much less snow than was expected, only around 3", mostly due to the fact that the air was extremely dry at the onset of the snow here in Western Mass, keeping the snow from starting until after midnight. Areas to our south and east saw much more. In fact, just over the border in Staffordville they saw 6", likewise with just to our east in Southbridge. The jackpot was just a bit further than that, with 12-22" amounts widespread in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Southeastern Massachusetts.

Just an interesting climatological note: we have not seen a 12" or more snowstorm here in Monson since 2006, when we received 20" on the February 11th storm. Since then, we have seen a number of 10" storms, but none reaching a foot.

I also want to take a moment to mention our temperatures over the past week. We hit our seasonal low thusfar on Friday the 18th, when he hit 4.7° at 7:01 AM. On Thursday, our daytime high was a mere 19.7° (the high temperature for the 24 hour day was 24° at 12:06AM), and we also didn't make it out of the 20s on Friday or Saturday, and will not again today, making it 5 days since we've seen 30° here in Monson.

Our next show at precipitation looks to be Christmas day. Unfortunately, this looks to be in the form of rain, perhaps starting out as a mix or light snow. The brunt of the rain looks to fall on the 26th though, with perhaps over an inch falling. Temperatures may also reach the 50s on the 26th for the first time since December 4th. This looks to diminish the snow that we received last night. It looks likely that most of our snow will hold out through Christmas, as temperatures should only be in the 30s through then. Happy Holidays!
